Reflection Statement:

For these sculptures we were assigned to show Negative Space, Focal Point, and Repetition respectfully. I chose to take these routes as this is where the inspiration lead me. I wanted to specifically focus on contrast with the colors that I chose to add something to the initial project. I was not particularly happy with how the Negative Space sculpture came out as it was not my intentions. I want to keep exploring the rudimentary ideas of art such as the Negative Space Idea and Repetition as they interested me the most out of the Ideas we talked about.

My Project:

For this visual symbols project I created the two required sculptures. For the bust I created my thoughts on the devil to show evil and ignorance. There were physical symbols for Satanism carved onto the bottom of the bust underneath the shoulders. My devil had a long tongue and horns with a devil tail as those are the most prominent objects when thinking about the commercialized devil. For the second project I decided to create a sharks open mouth with their traditional rows of teeth. I created traditional sea trash like a boot, cigarette, plastic bag, tire, etc. and then I placed them in the sharks mouth. I did this to symbolize the consistent defacement that the ocean faces everyday. Both projects were made out of clay, wire, and paint.

Research:

This website talks about how and where what we know as sea trash comes from. Most of the trash that ends up in the ocean is discarded by ignorant humans using the earth as their own personal trash can. The website also talks about how harmful this trash is on the ocean, polluting the water and creating life long effects for the oceans wildlife.

Reflection Statement:

My intent for both of my pieces was to create a shock and to make a statement. I wanted to focus on the devil and the dynamic of evil versus good because I thought that this would be the best to show worldwide symbols even if they were symbols for Satanism. I wanted to also focus on cultural issues like sea trash because keeping the ocean and the earth clean is very important to me. I decided to include traditional symbols like an upside down cross, the pentagram, or the sea trash. Tis piece allowed me to explore the ideas that people have surrounding sea pollution and the stigma surrounding the devil.

Lightener Museum Visit

Natural Senses Relief Sculpture

This is after the chapter titled “How to Make Moose Soup” in the book Natural History of the Senses. I decided to make a sculpture to in a way protest moose hunting which is a prevalent part in the chapter since it tells you how to make soup, out of a moose. I decided to create, what in my mind, a hunting trophy would look like. I also decided to add moose antlers to it to show that it is supposed to symbolize a moose. I used spray insulation foam and spray paint. I also included Aluminum foil to keep a structure. I used foam board to create a stand for the sculpture.

Artist Statement:

This sculpture explore the unnecessary fasciation that many have with hunting and the particularly moose of Canada. I decided to incorporate what I see a hunting trophy as, while I also attached antlers to the piece to symbolize a moose. As I read the chapter that provided the initial inspiration for my piece I thought about how raw and disgusting to me it is to hunt moose for sport. This fueled the inspiration for the project. I think that this content is important because if re done and executed it could be shown as a protest to stop hunting and protect the beautiful wildlife that moose are to many people.

My Memory:

I went to my fourth Motionless In White concert which is my favorite band. I have an obsession with the lead guitarist. I always stand on his side, at every concert, this time it seemed to pay off. Toward the end of the third to last song he ended up throwing me his guitar pick. It landed in my eye and fell to the ground luckily I was able to find it. It has since then meant so much to me.

Artist Statement:

This sculpture reflects when I was thrown and caught a guitar pick at a Motionless In White concert. The fourth concert I went to of the band I stood very close and my favorite guitarist threw me one of his special guitar picks. The color does not affect the memory itself because this is a happy memory but if the pick was colored with any other color it would not be an accurate representation of the object that this memory is associate with. The clay was the only object that I thought would help be curate the object in all of its glory. The pattern is very important as it is the signature pattern of the guitarist in question.
